The Wright brothers from the United States of America were the ones who built the first plane. At the beginning, the plane didn´t work but they fixed it. The journey lasted 37 metres, less than the length of an actual jumbo.
The plane was never able to fly alone. When launched into the air with a external catapult, a short flight was archieved, enough to test the steering system and control the aircraft. The first flight took place on December the 17th, 1903.
